Carpet Choices and Installation

The use of carpet as floorcovering in homes was initially limited to bedrooms. Nowadays, carpet flooring is also widely used in the home office, library and living room. In its commercial use, carpets were initially placed in libraries or offices as the material is a good sound insulator. Today, carpet flooring is widely installed for commercial spaces such as schools, office buildings and aged-care homes. Choosing the right carpet flooring entails examining the purpose of the room you wish to cover with carpet. Since there are various types of carpets and each focuses on different features.

Using Carpets as floorcovering offers many advantages, especially in terms of insulation, noise reduction and slip-resistance. Carpets are made from either Nylon, Polyester, Olefin or Wool and each offers a wide range of styles, patterns and colours that make them serve their purpose. From standard nylon carpets to anti-static and biophilic carpets, everyone now has the option to choose what’s best for their residential or commercial space in terms of what they are looking for in a floor covering.

Wool Carpet

Wool carpet offers the highest insulating quality from all carpet types because the material it is made from serves to protect the animal against the harsh conditions of the environment. Since the primary material comes from sheep’s wool, the carpet material features the same properties and naturally resists dirt and stains, making it an excellent choice for its hypoallergenic quality. Wool is also a hygroscopic material, meaning it naturally absorbs and stores moisture in the surrounding air. It also offer better acoustics as the material can absorb sounds over a wide range of frequencies, especially those wool carpets that have longer length and diameter and are more crimp and spiral. Given these features, wool carpet is best installed in bedrooms and aged-care facilities since the material is an excellent insulator and absorbs sound, making it the perfect material to enjoy a good night’s sleep.

Biophilic Design

The Biophilic Design from Interface aims to connect humans to their surroundings by mimicking natural surfaces and textures and consciously including patterns in nature to carpet flooring. Biophilic Design carpet flooring is best installed in places that need exposure to the outside world, like corporate office buildings and aged-care facilities. The patterns that mimic the environment best suit enclosed spaces because the carpets reflect the natural patterns in the environment and therefore bringing nature closer to the people who are not able to spend a lot of time outside. According to a study by Interface with psychologist Professor Sir Cary Cooper, the biophilic design affects the overall health and well-being of the people who are regularly exposed to it since the patterns that mimic the natural environment bring relaxation and peace of mind to the people, boosting work performance or good morale. To complete the Biophilic Design, its best to use building materials that mimic the natural patterns in the environment as well as natural resources like sunlight and vegetation to recreate the outside and bring nature closer to people who are inside.

Stain-Resistant Carpet

People choose stain-resistant carpets over ordinary carpets for places with high traffic activity or those with a high probability of spillage like in restaurants and pre-school classrooms. They tend to avoid selecting carpets with light colours to mask dark stains but nowadays, stain-resistant carpet come in all colours and styles since stain-resistant protection treatment is often applied to carpets to enhance the stain-resistant natural properties of the fibre. Stain-resistant carpet is best installed in homes with children or pets since any spillage wouldn’t leave any noticeable trace. Nolan Group’s Katto Emboss carpet tiles are also an ideal flooring for commercial spaces such as restaurants and areas with high-traffic activity. The stain-resistant property of the carpet, together with the heavy colours and the embossed patterns in Nolan Group’s Katto Emboss carpet tiles, make masking spilt drinks as well as dirt and stain harder to notice and easier to remove.

Anti-Static and Slip-Resistant Carpets

Walking barefoot on something that doesn’t send tingles up your foot or that doesn’t make you slip is always more preferable than those that do. Nowadays, carpets have anti-static and slip-resistant properties that allow for comfortable walks, especially if you are barefoot. It has excellent anti-static properties that make walking on floor carpets safer and more comfortable. If you want to change it up and cover your concrete floor with carpet, use Nolan Group’s Mortarclay carpet tiles which were specifically developed to complement the ageing of concrete or any hard surfaces. This anti-static and slip-resistant carpet tile is suitable for residential and commercial spaces that are quite aged and would need extra protection from the materials used to improve the area. In a recent installation by Creative Flooring, we used Nolan Group’s Yutaka carpet tiles in scarlet colour to cover the flooring of a school library in Perth Metropolitan area. We used the Yutaka carpet tiles for its anti-static and slip-resistant properties that would allow the children in the library to enjoy sitting and reading on the floor as well as roaming around the library without accidentally slipping. In a separate installation, we also used Yutaka carpet tiles but in various colours to bring life to a school. We installed various colours to compliment the school classrooms’ feature walls and accessories.
